Rancho Bernardo History: The chain of official title to the land around the Rancho Bernardo area dates back to 1769 when the King of Spain became the owner of California by conquest. In 1822, the lands of California became a territory of Mexico following the Mexican revolution against Spain. However, after the US-Mexico War (1846-1848) this land became to property of the United States.
In the early 30's, John and Lawrence Daley purchased the land for cattle grazing and in 1961 joined W.R.Hawn and Harry L. Summers to form a corporation known as Rancho Bernardo, Inc.. Several years later, the corporation was obtained by AVCO Community Developers. This was the beginning of Rancho Bernardo, as we know it today.
Rancho Bernardo was created to service its residents through many amenities. They are proud of their homes, light industrial parks, local businesses and shops, schools, churches, Chamber of Commerce, recreational clubs, golf course and volunteer organizations making this community a self-sufficient "52 week vacationland". Rancho Bernardo is fortunate to be a part of the Poway Unified School District, regarded as one of the best in the California school system. It also is abundant with churches serving the needs of worshippers of nearly every faith.
