People retire in San Diego because of the ideal climate and close proximity to the mountains, desert and ocean. You can have it all but this comes at a price. The median home price in San Diego has climbed to the high $300's in 2003. Prices continue to escalate with strong demand from young people wanting to get started with their first home, retires who have fled the colder climates and tranferees who are coming to work in San Diego's high tech and biotech businesses.

There are about 11 Senior Areas in San Diego. A Senior housing neighborhood has specific and enforcable age restrictions. One resident must be at least 55 years of age and there are other restrictions on the other occupants. There are many areas that are not designated as "Senior" but are adult oriented. These include condos and homes in golf course areas, patio homes on smaller lots and single story homes. Some retired people prefer elbow room and enjoy Escondido and Fallbrook homes that offer 1/2 acre+ homes with pools, views and room for their RV's. These homes range from $500,000-800,000 and are truely beautiful properties with an emphasis on outdoor living and year round sunshine!

The two SENIOR areas in Rancho Bernardo are Seven Oaks and Oaks North. Seven Oaks was built in the 60-70's and are 1100-2000 sq.ft. homes ranging from $325,000-475,000. My mother lives in this neighborhood and loves the proximity to shopping, banks, medical facilities, restaurants and the library. The club has a large (warm) pool, spa, lawn bowling, library, workshop and activites year round. Condos are also in this neighborhood.

Oaks North is located around the Executive Oaks North Golf Course and has a fabulous club with pool, spa, tennis, library,woodworking, ceramics and other activity rooms. There are patio homes, condos and homes on view and private lots. Prices are running $350,000-500,000 for the homes and $270,000+ for the condos. Oaks North has a lovely retail area centered around a winery that is absolutely charming.
